“Pradeep, after loving this profession for so many years… is it time for me to call it quits?”
A dear photographer friend of mine, someone I’ve known for decades, asked me this with tear-filled eyes when we met the other day.
Hearing those words from a man who had aimed his lens at me countless times—capturing everything from my passport photos to cherished family portraits—left me deeply heartbroken and deeply contemplative.
Here is what happened…
Recently, a young family—a couple and their child—walked into his studio wanting a beautiful family portrait.
The receptionist, a stylish young guy with a trendy look, called my friend upstairs. As always, my friend picked up his camera with a warm, welcoming smile, ready to frame their memory.
But he sensed a strange discomfort in the family’s body language. Suddenly, the woman asked:
“Excuse me, can we have that guy from the reception take our photos instead? He’s young, so he’ll probably know the latest trends and angles better!”
For a seasoned veteran with decades of experience under his belt, those were not just words. It was a crushing blow.
His heart sank at how casually decades of hard-earned mastery were dismissed based solely on superficial appearances. As he told me, “I was speechlessly paralyzed… I didn’t know how to react.”
Beyond the heartbreak, however, lies a harsh reality of today’s world. People often value perceived modern relevance over deep experience.
No matter how skilled or experienced we are, if we fail to adapt and evolve with changing times… the world will quickly label us as ‘outdated.’
True resilience lies in bridging the gap—combining the wisdom and depth of experienced veterans with the modern trends, technology, and perspectives of the new generation.
The truth is simple: If we hesitate to update ourselves, we fall behind.
If we don’t adapt to the rhythm of the changing times, the world will quietly leave us behind. That’s a guarantee.
