From Bike Taxis to Free Bus Rides: How Kerala is Redefining the Joy of Public Travel

Kochi is a city that never stands still. Every time I return, I can feel its pulse quickening, its landscape shifting, and its life evolving in beautiful, unexpected ways. This recent vacation was no exception, but what stole my heart wasn’t a grand monument—it was the simple joy of rediscovering how we move together as a community.

As someone who hasn’t owned a car for the last fifteen years and relies entirely on public transport, navigating the holiday rush used to be a chore. Then came the recent launch of Uber and Rapido bikes in Kochi. Suddenly, the city opened up to me in a whole new way. I found myself completely hooked on the freedom of individual two-wheeled rides.

What began as a matter of convenience quickly turned into the most heartwarming part of my journey. The true magic of these bike services lies in the incredible souls navigating the handlebars.

The drivers come from every walk of life imaginable. On the back of those bikes, I have shared rides—and stories—with engineers, recent graduates, school teachers, and even a practicing doctor. Some are out there to support their families, while others do it simply to clear their minds or meet new people. Every ride feels like a fast friendship forged in the breeze. For fifteen or twenty minutes, we talk about everything under the sun, leaving the ride not just as passenger and driver, but as two human beings who truly connected.

But the change on Kochi’s roads goes far deeper than just bike taxis. There is a quiet, powerful revolution happening in our mass transit system right now. The government’s recent rollout of the ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme—offering completely free travel for women on KSRTC ordinary buses—has breathed vibrant new life into our public transport culture.

Suddenly, the familiar red-and-yellow KSRTC buses are filled with a renewed sense of purpose and pride. Seeing domestic workers, students, fish venders, and homemakers claim their space on these buses without the burden of a fare is incredibly moving. It isn’t just about saving money; it’s about making public transport accessible, dignified, and inherently democratic. It is drawing people back to the buses, creating a bustling sense of shared community on every route.

An efficient transport system is the lifeblood of any society, and right now, Kerala is transforming at a breathtaking pace. Traveling all the way from Kasaragod to Trivandrum this season, I saw the future unfolding.

The newly expanding National Highways are going to be the literal veins of our growth. Once completed, they will completely supercharge our economy, shrinking distances and bringing us closer together. You can already feel this energy in the air—look at the Vande Bharat trains, which are so packed with hopeful travelers that you have to book a seat at least two weeks in advance.

Seeing this change fills me with an overwhelming sense of optimism. My beautiful Kerala is moving forward, fast.

My dream now is to see these micro-mobility Uber/Rapido services thrive in every single district, perfectly complementing the revamped strength of our KSRTC buses and trains. It is a simple, brilliant ecosystem that not only fuels our economy but creates flexible, dignified options for everyone.

Life is changing every day in Kochi, and for the first time in a long time, it feels like we are all riding together toward a brighter, more connected, and inclusive tomorrow.
