The Trap of “Later”: Why the Only Time You Have Is Now

“Ah, we’ll see about it later… there’s still plenty of time.”

Have any of us gone through life without saying these words at least once? I highly doubt it.

“There’s still time; we’ll see later.” It is the single biggest tool we use to push aside our fondest dreams, the good deeds we’ve longed to do, the love we need to express to our dear ones, or those life-changing decisions waiting to be made.

But have you ever paused to think—how much time do we actually have left?

Most of us live under the assumption that an endless stretch of days lies ahead of us, like grains of sand on a seashore. We convince ourselves that ‘tomorrow’ is something we hold firmly in our hands. Yet the truth is, we cannot rewrite the past, nor can we control the future. The only absolute reality in our possession is ‘this very moment.’ Still, we sacrifice this present instance for a tomorrow that was never guaranteed to begin with. In reality, when we say “we’ll see later,” we aren’t just postponing tasks—we are putting our own lives on hold.

Our lifespan is merely a finite number of breaths. With every passing second, the time we have left to push things off to tomorrow steadily shrinks.

Unread books, unfinished projects, unmade phone calls to friends, unspoken apologies, and relationships waiting for forgiveness… so many things linger in the background. We wait, thinking, “I’ll do it someday.” But time waits for no one. It moves silently, swiftly, and relentlessly forward.

There is only one way to overcome this cycle—return to the present moment. Once you learn to live in the now, no fear can touch you.

Whatever it is that you desire to do, take that first step right now. Is there someone you need to talk to? Speak to them today. Is there something you want to learn? Start learning it this very moment. Why wait for tomorrow?

If we have the courage to dream, we must show at least half as much courage to live out those dreams.

Remember this once more: life is far too short to keep putting things off. Tomorrow is never a guarantee; it is merely a hope. All you truly own is this moment. Try letting go of that “we’ll see later” mindset—you might just find your life becoming infinitely more meaningful.
